The Rabbit - a very common sight acoss much of Britain.Barron Pest Control for traditional rabbit control.

The Pests

Rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus) The rabbit was thought to have been introduced to Britain by the Normans but there is now some evidence that they were brought by the Romans. Whoever was responsible the rabbits, being rabbits, did their thing and they are now common across all of Western Europe.

Rabbits are able to breed from 2-3 months old and have a gestation period of just 28 days, in favourable conditions a doe can have up to 5 litters a year with up to 5 young in each.

Cage traps can be effective in the war against rabbits. Barron Pest Control for Rabbit Control Somerset.

Rabbits cause an enormous amount of damage every year to crops, railways, nurseries, gardens, golf courses, runways, motorways, cemeteries etc. Recent DEFRA estimates put rabbit damage at £10 per annum, per rabbit to cereal and equivalent crops and there are estimated to be around 40 to 50 million wild rabbits in Britain at present, with the population growing year on year. Other estimates state that 10 rabbits will eat the equivalent amount of grass to 1 sheep.

Methods of rabbit control are varied and can be quite costly. Fencing of vulnerable crops with electric or wire can be effective. Gassing using Aluminium Phosphide can work in the right conditions. Likewise shooting, snaring, netting, ferreting and trapping with spring, cage & box traps can make serious inroads into localised rabbit populations.

Ferrets - Barron Pest Control's Traditional allies in combatting rabbits.

I have kept ferrets since I was a child and have caught many 100's of rabbits here in Somerset over the last 40 years using this age old traditional method. One thing is for sure where rabbits are concerned, whatever methods we use to try and control them, they are here to stay.
